The mission of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry is to publish the best work we can find in celebration of and in defense of places where there are no roads. Now in our seventh year, the journal is an independent, not-for-profit venture published annually each summer.

We especially welcome work by student writers. Each year, we sponsor a no-fee student contest, with cash awards.

The 2025 issue of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry contains work by 52 writers and two artists, each of them sharing insights and experiences from the backcountry. For more info on this year’s issue, visit deepwildjournal.com.

The journal is printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) paper, with a four-color cover.  It is perfect-bound, and measures 6×8. The 2023 issue is 168 pages in length.
