The mission of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry is to provide a home for creative work inspired by journeys to places where there are no roads. Now in its third year, the journal is an independent, not-for-profit venture, published annually each summer.

We especially welcome work by student writers. Each year, we sponsor a no-fee student contest. The contest for our 2021 issue was for undergraduate student poetry. For 2022, we will be seeking essays from graduate students.

The 2021 issue of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry contains work by 51 writers and two artists, each of them sharing insights and experiences from the backcountry. The Table of Contents and the Foreword can be seen on the homepage.

The journal is printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) paper, with a four-color cover.  It is perfect-bound, and measures 6×8. The 2021 issue is 148 pages in length.
