The mission of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry is to publish the best work we can find in celebration of, and in defense of, places where there are no roads. Now entering our sixth year, the journal is an independent, not-for-profit venture published annually each summer.
We especially welcome work by student writers. Each year, we sponsor a no-fee student contest, with cash awards. The contest for our 2023 issue was for graduate student poetry, in 2022 for essays from graduate students, and for 2021 for undergraduate poets.
The 2023 issue of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry contains work by 52 writers and two artists, each of them sharing insights and experiences from the backcountry. The Table of Contents and the Foreword can be seen on the deepwildjournal.com homepage.
The journal is printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) paper, with a four-color cover. It is perfect-bound, and measures 6×8. The 2023 issue is 168 pages in length.
