The mission of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry is to publish the best work we can find in celebration of, and in defense of, places where there are no roads. Now in its fourth year, the journal is an independent, not-for-profit venture published annually each summer.
We especially welcome work by student writers. Each year, we sponsor a no-fee student contest. The contest for our 2021 issue was for undergraduate student poetry and in 2022 for essays from graduate students. For 2023, we will be seeking poetry from graduate students.
The 2022 issue of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry contains work by 51 writers and two artists, each of them sharing insights and experiences from the backcountry. The Table of Contents and the Foreword can be seen on the deepwildjournal.com homepage.
The journal is printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) paper, with a four-color cover. It is perfect-bound, and measures 6×8. The 2022 issue is 172 pages in length.
