The editors of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry invite students currently enrolled in undergraduate programs to submit essays for our 2020 Undergraduate Student Essay Writing Contest. We seek work that conjures the experiences, observations, and insights of journeys to wild places where there are no roads. The length limit is 3,000 words. There is no entry fee. Up to three essays will be chosen for publication in the June 2020 volume of Deep Wild Journal, and the authors will receive cash awards of $100 and five copies of the journal. Contest submissions will be accepted between January 15 and March 15 on our Submittable page. For more details, read our Contest Guidelines. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the current issue of Deep Wild Journal beforehand. Educational discounts for students and faculty are available here.
We welcome work from graduate students and all others during our regular submissions window—for poetry, until December 31 and for prose and artwork, January 31.
