“Cottonwood in Halls Creek,” watercolor by Bessann Swanson

We’re thrilled to have Bessann Swanson’s artwork, “Cottonwood in Halls Creek,” as the cover image for the 2022 issue of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry. Bessann is a watercolorist based in Salt Lake City whose passion is to express “the beauty of our western wilderness vistas.” This is the first Colorado Plateau image we have featured on our cover!

Many fine artists sent us their work to be considered for the cover of Deep Wild 2022, which made the task of choosing just one challenging indeed. We are in awe of their talent and grateful for the opportunity to experience their work.

This issue of Deep Wild Journal, our fourth, will be the biggest yet: 51 writers of essays, fiction, and poetry bringing us the news from places where there are no roads. Reserve your copy now at deepwildjournal.com/subscribe. ($20, domestic postage included).
