Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry is the home for creative work inspired by journeys to places where there are no roads. Each summer we produce a high-quality, portable, durable journal that is perfect for your own backcountry journeys, whether they be on foot, by boat, or in your easy chair.
Our 2021 issue contains work by fifty-one writers from 23 states and four continents, as they take us to their favorite wild places. We go on journeys far afield, to New Zealand, China, and South Africa. Stateside, we hike the AT and the PCT, canoe in Alaska and the Everglades, and bushwhack high in the Rockies and deep down in the Grand Canyon.
We are in our third year, and despite the challenges of the pandemic, going reasonably strong. We are a not-for-profit outfit that depends on subscriptions and donations to make ends meet (we do not charge writers to submit their work.) We are committed to fostering student writing through our annual contest and other initiatives, and working to develop our Deep Wild Books division, a collaborative publishing project with writers that aims to publish the best book-length manuscripts set in the backcountry.
